Dean of ESR and Vice President of Earlham

Reporting to the President of Earlham, the Dean is the chief academic and administrative officer of the Earlham School of Religion, and also Vice President of Earlham. Responsibilities include providing leadership to the faculty in program and curriculum development, coordination of administration and planning activities, budget preparation and oversight, institutional advancement and representation of ESR to Quaker constituencies.

The Dean of ESR shall be named by the President after consultation with the ESR Board of Advisors, subject to the approval of the Earlham Board of Trustees.

Responsibilities

The Dean of ESR provides leadership to the faculty in program and curriculum development.

The Dean of ESR oversees and coordinates the faculty personnel processes. S/he oversees the faculty search process and advises the President on recommendations for appointment, renewal and promotion of regular members of the faculty. In consultation with the faculty, s/he makes appointments of part-time and adjunct faculty. S/he recommends an annual salary for each member of the faculty, and also oversees, in accord with established policy, the distribution of resources and opportunities for faculty development.

The Dean of ESR oversees and monitors ESR's fidelity to authoritative governance procedures.

The Dean of ESR provides leadership in the seminary's planning endeavors.

The Dean of ESR serves as primary liaison to the seminary's Board of Advisors. The Dean serves ex officio as a member of the Board of Advisors and as a member of the School of Religion Committee of the Earlham Board of Trustees.

The Dean of ESR works with the Vice President for Financial Affairs and the President in preparing an annual budget for consideration by the Board of Trustees, and monitors adherence to this budget once approved.

The Dean of ESR appoints and oversees the work of other administrative staff in admissions, financial aid, development, student services. The Dean oversees a process for the annual evaluation of administrative faculty and hourly staff.

The Dean of ESR works with the Vice President for Institutional Advancement in matters of development and external relations for ESR. The Dean represents ESR to Yearly Meetings and national and international organizations affiliated with the Religious Society of Friends.

As a Vice President of Earlham, the Dean works with the President on matters affecting the welfare of Earlham as a whole.

Qualifications

Qualifications include an academic record appropriate to appointment as a member of the faculty and a record of successful leadership and administration. The Dean will be a member of the Religious Society of Friends with a firm commitment to Christian Quakerism, and an understanding of decision-making within Friends' institutions.
