Faculty Position in Ministry of Writing

The Earlham School of Religion (ESR), a Quaker seminary, seeks candidates for a teaching faculty appointment within the Ministry of Writing emphasis to teach introductory and advanced writing courses, advise divinity students with a Ministry of Writing emphasis, facilitate the annual Tom Mullen Ministry of Writing Colloquium, and give input into the development of and subsequent selection of writers for a “Writers in Residence” program. Qualified candidates will have academic and practical experience that demonstrates competency in religious writing, knowledge of publishing, and the ability and passion to equip individuals for a ministry of writing. Candidates must be capable of working respectfully and collegially with students and faculty representing a wide range of theological, political, and social perspectives in both on-campus and distance-education environments. Qualified candidates would have a masters level degree in either Divinity or Creative Writing or both, and have extensive ministry experience. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated teaching ability, and the ability to work with emerging educational technologies.

The School of Religion is a seminary of the Religious Society of Friends, though over a third of the students are other than Quaker. ESR has about 120 students and is part of Earlham, sharing its campus with Earlham College, a respected liberal arts college of about 1200 students. ESR is also in partnership with Bethany Theological Seminary, a seminary of similar size which serves the Church of the Brethren, another historic peace church. Teaching faculty are expected to be part of the campus life.

Qualified candidates from the Religious Society of Friends, women, and minorities are especially invited to apply. Review of applications begins in December and will continue until the position is filled. Teaching responsibilities will commence in the 2013-14 academic year.
