Lynne Lawson
M.A. student
I wanted to study at seminary because I'd been immersed in the particular viewpoint of my Christian religion for most of my life and wanted a more academic perspective on the Bible and Christianity.
As a candidate for the M.A., I looked forward to the academic experience that I'd have at ESR. What I hadn't expected was how much the ESR and Earlham College communities would enhance my education. At ESR there's a diversity of students, even within the Quaker tradition, which makes for fascinating conversation in and out of the classroom. I love Common Meals, where there's opportunity for fellowship with students and teachers as well as interesting programs; weekly Peace Forum with its inspiring speakers; special conferences put on by ESR with attendance by professionals from around the country; and a multitude of cultural and academic programs at Earlham College.
Feeling at home spiritually was a key criterion for me in choosing ESR. Even though I'm not a Quaker, I feel that I fit in philosophically and spiritually at the school. I appreciate the ample opportunities for worship at Earlham and Bethany. At ESR, learning is abundant, worshipful, and joyful.
A passion for theology that I've discovered at ESR has expressed itself largely in written form. I've spent many happy hours researching topics and writing papers for classes. The enjoyment I get from writing projects gives me a clue as to how I'll use my ESR education. I've always enjoyed writing; now I have something to write about with a natural enthusiasm. While working on my thesis, I also have several articles in progress, articles that I either have submitted or intend to submit for publication in religious journals. Once I have the credentials of my degree, I may also pursue public speaking on spiritual topics.
