ESR Announces Ministry of Writing Professor
ESR is pleased to announce the appointment of Ben Brazil as the new Assistant Professor and Director of the Ministry of Writing Program.
Ben comes to us from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, where he is currently serving as both Assistant Director of the Youth Theological Initiative, a program of the Candler School of Theology at Emory, and also as an instructor of courses including "Contemporary Religious Experience: Spiritual but not Religious."
He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Latin America Studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a Masters of Theological Studies from the Candler School of Theology at Emory University, and is currently A Ph.D. candidate and Woodruff Fellow in Emory University’s Graduate Division of Religion. Ben will complete his dissertation, “Wandering Spirits: Youth Travel and Spiritual Seeking, 1964-1980,” this spring.
"I love writing as a craft," Ben stated in his application letter. "I love the flavor of words, the rhythm of sentences, and the architecture of books. I enjoy the challenge of slipping good stories and telling details into academic work, and, conversely, the challenge of fitting top-notch scholarship into good narrative writing." He also stated that "the idea of a position that allows me to attend to writing and faith – and not just the academic study of religion – appeals to me tremendously."
Ben will join us for the Fall 2013 semester and will be teaching a course during the August Intensive. Please join us in welcoming him to the ESR community!
