GFJN 29f (16–): But the Lord opened to me who the great deceivers were, and how far they might come...even such as came as far as Cain, to hear the voice of God;.... yet turned from the Spirit and the Word, and went into the gainsaying ... persecuted them that were in the power, as Cain did....And I saw the state of those, both priests and people, who in reading the scriptures, cry out much against Cain, Esau, and Judas, and other wicked men of former times, mentioned in the Holy Scriptures; but do not see the nature of Cain, of Esau, of Judas, and those others, in themselves... sitting up above all that is called God in them.

GF7: 253 (1664): Friends, this is the day of the trial of your faith.... the one faith, which keeps you in the oneness, and all the sacrificers, and worshippers, and religions that are not in this faith, are not one, their sacrifices nor offerings God hath no respect to, but they are like Cain's, that went from the presence of God, and persecuted about his religion, who built a city in the land of Nod, [Gen 4:11-17] which signifies, wandering to and fro, and unsettled, and tossings to and fro, up and down. And this is the city that all that persecute about religion live in.... let them be of what profession or religion soever, heathen, Jew, or Christian, if they be persecutors about religion with carnal weapons, they are in Cain's land of Nod, wandering out of the faith of Abel, of the elect; in which faith God accepts the sacrifice, and these are in the land of the living....
IP1: 233f (1659): There is a faith which is of a man's self; and a faith which is the gift of God; or a power of believing, which is found in the nature of fallen man; and a power of believing, which is given from above. As there are two births, the first and the second, so they have each their faith... Cain will sacrifice with his faith, and he believes he shall be accepted; had he not believed so, he would not have been so angry when he found otherwise: and the Cainish spirit in man, the vagabond from the life of God [Gen 4:12-14], which hath not a habitation in God, nor the eternal life of God abiding in him, is busy with the same faith at this day, and hath the same expectation from it as Cain had.

GF8:252 (1684): And now, friends, you know envious Cain was a sacrificer as well as Abel, but out of the faith and righteousness, who murdered his brother Abel [Gen 4:3-8], he may be said to have been a type of Judas, who was a partaker of the ministry, yet betrayed his master [Mat 10:4 | Mar 3:19 | Luk 6:16].
JN1: 162 (1653): ... All your churches, all your worships ... are for the fire ... for they are the works of the flesh, proceeding for the first nature; & not knowing the word of God, but only the letter, ye crucify the just, and ye get up in the just's place, quenching the light within you, the deceit transforms in his place as Cain did when he slew his brother Abel; he gets up into his brother's place, and said, "Am I my brother's keeper?" So all you who crucify the just, ye are as Cain; for it is the righteous that God doth accept, the second birth. As you read Cain's sacrifice God did not accept, but Abel the second God did accept, for he was righteous. And Cain slew Abel, because Abel's works were righteous and Cain's were evil. Now all you who are in the first birth are Cain, in envy, manslayers, and your sacrifice God doth not accept: see whether you be in envy or no. Now all that come to the word, come before Cain was.
IP1: 248 (1659): What is fed by man's scripture knowledge, but the earthly understanding? The earthly will heated, the earthly affections warmed? And of the fruits of this earth they bring sacrifices to God: and they are angry that God hath raised up Abel, their younger brother, who offers up the Lamb of God to God, and and serves the living God, in his own living Spirit, and with the faith which comes from him. IP3: 150 (1668): Cain was the first wicked man that we read of; and how tender was God towards him! even him that sacrificed not after the Spirit, but after the flesh, and slew his brother Abel. Now can any man lay Cain's wickedness either upon the will, or upon the decree and counsel of God? Might he not have done well? Might he not have sacrificed to God in the faith, as well as his brother Abel? And if he had done well, and offered in the faith, had he not found forgiveness and acceptance with the Lord? God accepteth no man's person: God rejecteth no man's person; but there is a seed he hath chosen; and to gather man into his seed, is his delight and work; as it is the delight, nature, and work of another spirit to scatter from this seed.

HPS 343f (Elizabeth Bathurst, 1679): [(continued from under Rom 3:25) Begins with Heb 11:4 and asks how God testified of Abel's gift; how did he and Cain know whether their gifts were accepted? Both had enough] "manifestation of the Spirit in them .. to know it to be their Duty to offer Sacrifice unto him. But Cain sticking in the Form, and not flying on the Wing of Faith to Christ, the one Offering, mist the mark that should have been aimed at by him, and for this cause God rejected both him and his Offering... GF4: 352 (1668): ...such as envied their brother christian, and persecuted him, such were not to offer their gift until they were reconciled to the brethren [Mat 5:23f]; for if they do, God has no respect to their sacrifice, no more than he has to Cain's that envies his brother [Gen 4:5].
MFU 14 (1652): ... thou hast made many long prayers and great profession of the scripture without thee, but if ever thou come to know the truth, thou shalt find, that they were Cain,s sacrifices, and that thou offered them up in the carnish [carnal] nature, which never was nor never shall be accepted [Gen 4:5], but is an abomination to the lord, examine truly and see what fruits they have brought forth....

Katharine Evans, 1662 (HPS 187): We told him, all their Praying, Preaching ... was no more accepted than Cain's Sacrifice [Gen 4:5], unless they were moved of the Eternal Spirit of the Lord.

GF5: 399 (1679): And Cain had his day of visitation; for the Lord told him, "if he did well, he should be accepted; and if not, sin lay at his door [Gen 4:6f]:" so there was a promise of God to Cain, if he had believed it and received it; so his destruction was of himself.
RBA 132 (1678, V/VI:19): God hath given to every man a day or time of visitation, wherein it is possible for him to be saved.... [Gen 4:6f] This was said to Cain before he slew his brother Abel, when the evil seed began to tempt him and work in his heart, we see how God gave warning to Cain in season, and in the day of his visitation towards him acceptance and remission if he did well ... So that if we may trust God Almighty, ...it was possible in a day even for Cain to be accepted. Neither could God have proposed the doing of good as a condition, if he had not given Cain sufficient strength whereby he was capable to do good.
RBA 191, 3 (1678, VII:8): ...the immediate cause of a man's justification in the sight of God, is the revelation of Jesus Christ in the soul, changing, altering, and renewing the mind.... Those then that find him thus raised and ruling in them have a true ground of hope to believe that they are justified by his blood. But let not any deceive themselves, so as to foster themselves in a vain hope and confidence that aby the death and sufferings of Christ they are justified, so long as "sin lies at their door" (Gen 4:7), iniquity prevails, and they remain unrenewed and unregenerate....
JN1: 60 (1653): Thou art of the brood that came to ask Christ by what authority he did those things his Father had sent him to do [Mat 21:23]; and because thou must not enter into the secrets of God by thy serpent's wisdom, thou wilt forbid and persecute them in whom it is revealed, as they did. Now wouldst thou but look back and search the Scriptures thou shouldst find thy generation all along from Cain to thyself: for all particulars are of that serpent’s brood [Mat 23:33]. SBD 69 (1750): And when a minister is thus prepared by spiritual affliction, occasioned by the withdrawing of divine virtue from his mind, and suffered, as many good persons have been, to be buffeted, tempted, tried, and sifted by Satan [Luk 22:31], feeling faith, hope, and patience almost to fail; yet in this state, by a secret and hidden power, neither seen nor thought of, he is preserved; though for very anguish he may be ready to cry out in the bitterness of his soul, "Oh! wretched man that I am [Rom 7:24], to undertake what I was not called to, and to run before I was sent [Jer 23:21]. My punishment is greater than I can bear." [Gen 4:13] Thus it pleases God to suffer his ministers to be proved, that they may come forth as vessels fit for the refiner.
JWJM 63 (1757): [JW refutes argument that Negroes are descended from Cain and bear his mark [Gen 4:15] by citing [Gen 7:21-24]: if all flesh died except Noah & family (descendants of Seth), Cain's descendants must have perished.]

Geneva Margins Gen 5:29: shall comfort us: Lamech had respect for the promise, Ge 3:15, and desired to see the deliverer who would be sent and yet saw but a figure of it. He spoke this by the spirit of prophecy because Noah delivered the Church and preserved it by his obedience.

EQ 404 (George Fox "the Younger", 1660): Therefore, seeing people will neither hear the prophets of the Lord, nor regard the Light of his Son in their consciences, the Lord will leave striving with such a people, and bring sudden destruction on them [Gen 6], and deliver his chosen....

JWJM 214 (1762): To suppose it right that an innocent man shall at this day be excluded from the common rules of justice, be deprived of that liberty which is the natural right of human creatures, and be a slave to others during life on a account of a sin committed by his immediate parents or a sin committed by Ham, the son of Noah [Gen 9:2-27], is a supposition too gross to be admitted into the mind of any person who sincerely desires to be governed by solid principles.
GF2: 341 (1688): I wrote a paper to show... that many of the holy men and prophets of God,and of the apostles of Christ, were husbandmen and tradesmen; by which people might see how unlike to them the world's teachers now are. Righteous Abel was a shepherd, "a keeper of sheep" [Gen 4:2]. Noah was an husbandman [Gen 9:20], and he was "a just man, and perfect in his generation, and walked with God" [Gen 6:9]....
GF2: 348 (1688): But debate, strife, wilfulness, laying open one another's nakedness and weakness, is not the practice of heavenly wisdom's children, (but of Ham's, [Gen 9:22]) nor from the spirit of Christ...
JN3:718f (Robert Rich, 1657): What else remarkable this day was that (one Robert Rich, a merchant who for several days before had attended the Parliament with letters, petitions, and papers on behalf of James Nayler, as to the clearing of his innocency), this morning he stood at the Parliament door, crying to the members as they passed in, to some after this manner, "Blessed be the Lord God of Shem, Canaan shall be his servant [Gen 9:26]," and to others he said, "Cursed be Canaan, a servant of servants shall he be [Gen 9:25]," and likewise crying to several of them, whom pretended to be friends to innocency and justice, "Why is thy countenance fallen? hadst thou done will wouldst thou not be accepted? but now sin lies at thy door [Gen 4:6f]," and cried, "The Lord is coming to separate between the sheep and the goats [Mat 25:32f], to gather his wheat into garners, and to burn up the chaff with fire which is not to be quenched [Mat 3:12]." These words passed with such a power (mixed sometime with singing) that none resisted or gainsaid.
IP2: 169 (1661): O God of love! Who knowest the value and price of souls, pity thy poor creatures, and put a stop to this course of perishing, wherein so many multitudes are overtaken and pass down into the pit unawares! ... in the strength of thy compassions bring forth thy judgment and thy mercy among the sons of men! Build up the tents of Shem; persuade Japhet to dwell therein; and let Canaan become a servant [Gen 9:27].
