SUMMARY:Sowing Seeds of Peace in Bolivia
DESCRIPTION:In 2010\, Bolivian Quaker Magaly Quispe started offering Alternatives to Violence workshops in one Bolivian prison. AVP-Bolivia has now reached 21 prisons – and every department in Bolivia. Come hear about Magaly’s work for peace and how it has expanded to anti-domestic violence work\, as well as a  “study home” — a residence for rural students who live too far from a high school to commute daily. Magaly was also one of the principal guides and hosts for ESR’s May 2024 class in Bolivia. \n\n\n\nClear Creek\, West Richmond Friends\, and First Friends meetings co-host this event. Light refreshments will be provided.  The talk is also available on Zoom. Email mujetbr@earlham.edu for the link. \n\n\n\nBeginning by offering an Alternatives to Violence workshop in one La Paz prison\, Magaly now offers AVP in prisons throughout Bolivia. She and her team also build greenhouses in prisons\, allowing inmates to grow their own food\, to have meaningful work\, and to reconnect to the land and\, in some cases\, to their rural roots.

SUMMARY:Pastors Conference
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Friday\, October 18th for a day of reflecting on the role of silence in pastoral ministry. \n\n\n\nWhether programmed or unprogrammed\, Quakers have always valued silence as an important means of accessing divine grace and listening to God. Some talk about “centering down” or “communion in the manner of Friends”; programmed Meetings talk about “open worship” or “waiting worship.” In a noisy and divisive time\, the place of silence and stillness seems more important than ever. Yet we are also aware of folks being “silenced” from sharing hard truths or strong emotions. How do we address these issues? \n\n\n\nNon-Quakers are also welcome to join the conversation! Many other traditions have contemplative components to their worship and liturgy. Let’s learn from each other. \n\n\n\nREGISTER HERE \n\n\n\nOur featured presenter will be Gregg Koskella from Newberg\, Oregon. Here is his bio: \n\n\n\nAfter spending decades as a pastor\, I no longer have that as my job. Our faith community shattered\, and yet I still am committed to walking the journey of life and faith in community. Writings of women from the Middle Ages\, mystics like Hildegard of Bingen and Catherine of Siena\, have grounded me in the last few years and given me a new (and ancient) spiritual life. \n\n\n\nI want to be someone who pursues and explores in all kinds of ways. I’m deeply committed to honesty and living with integrity to the best of my ability. I know and love theology\, Quakers\, and church life\, and also have found that the distance of not serving in day-to-day ministry gives a different perspective. I hope that will be helpful and encouraging to those in vocational ministry. \n\n\n\nI’ve been Elaine’s husband since 1990. I’m also Aubrey\, Hayley\, and Natalie’s dad. \n\n\n\nHe is the author of Finding Hildegard: Healing through Medieval Wisdom. \n\n\n\nJoin us for a rich time of fellowship\, conversation\, worship\, and learning. Breakfast and lunch will be provided for those attending in-person.

SUMMARY:Trustees Training Series #2: Session 2\, Dividing the Work & Good Communication
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a new trustees training series with new topics. We will gather on Zoom monthly on the third Thursday of January through May\, 2025. Emily Provance will facilitate the series but each session will have a different guest speaker. \n\n\n\nFor our February training\, we will discuss how to divide up responsibilities and practice good communication. What authority belongs to trustees? What authority belongs to the whole meeting or church or Quaker organization? How do we prevent communications gaps and hard feelings? How do we divide our responsibilities if the group has trustees\, a finance committee\, a property committee\, a treasurer\, and possibly even staff and a board of directors? How do we avoid stepping on each other’s toes\, getting our work done reasonably efficiently while still relying on guidance from the Holy Spirit? Because these arrangements vary so much from one organization to another\, this workshop will not attempt to provide any “correct” answers. Instead\, we’ll focus on considering helpful principles. How do we maintain a functional and mutually respectful community?

SUMMARY:2025 Perkins Family Lecture Series - With Colin Saxton
DESCRIPTION:Yearning and Yielding: Living Together in the Life and Power of God \n\n\n\nFriends all everywhere\, in the life and power of God\, live and dwell\, and spread the truth abroad. Quench not the spirit\, but live in love and unity one with another; that with the wisdom of God\, ye may all be ordered to God’s glory… And live all as the family of God in love\, in life\, in truth\, in power… George Fox\, Epistle 150 \n\n\n\nFor many\, these are fearful and anxious times. Our world is marked by injustice and violence\, isolation and division\, and hope often feels like it is slipping from our fingers. Quakers\, of course\, are not immune to these realities. We fret over the future\, worry about declining numbers\, and often find ourselves caught in a cycle of not knowing what to do and just wanting to do something to make a difference. \n\n\n\nIn our better moments\, we know a deeper truth. Not only is there One who can speak to our condition but also One who can animate and empower our lives and life together—if we are willing. Over the last several years\, I have been struck by George Fox’sGod’s repeated admonition and invitation to others to “God’s”live in the Life and Power.“ In the face of their current crises and challenges\, he would often ask how or whether this was their reality. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDo I live in the Life and Power? Do you? Do we—as the Religious Society of Friends? \n\n\n\n“I yearn to know in my bones the reality of Christ and learn to yield to the power available through the Risen One“ (Philippians 3:10). Even more\, I long to belong to a community that hungers and thirsts for this same reality\, as we proclaim and demonstrate the peaceable kingdom. I invite you to join me and help me consider and act on what this might mean as we gather at ESR. Friends all everywhere\, in the life and power of God\, live and dwell\, and spread the truth abroad. \n\n\n\nColin Saxton Bio \n\n\n\nColin is a member of North Valley Friends in Newberg\, OR. He and Janine are the parents of four grown children and two grandchildren. After working for Quaker organizations for most of his adult life\, Colin now serves as the Everence Stewardship Theologian and Director of Church Relations. Through teaching\, speaking\, writing\, and facilitation\, he helps individuals\, congregations\, denominations\, and non-profits reimagine approaches to generosity and faithful stewardship. Through Everence\, he serves as an adjunct instructor through the Lake Institute/Lilly Family School of Philanthropy. \n\n\n\nColin has served the Quaker community as a pastor\, adjunct professor\, fundraiser\, retreat leader/speaker\, Yearly Meeting superintendent\, and General Secretary of Friends United Meeting. He has been a board member for several organizations and has traveled the world\, visiting and teaching among Friends and others. Colin received his M.A. from Eastern Mennonite Seminary and a D.Min. in leadership and spiritual formation from George Fox University/Seminary. He is a partner and associate with Growing Edge Resources (https://www.growingedgeresources.com)\, a coaching and consulting company working with individuals\, congregations\, and non-profits to help them discover their growing edge. Colin has written for several publications\, including a handful of books through Friends United Press. His blog\, Walking in the Way and Stumbling Toward Faithfulness\, is “at https://walkingintheway.blog. \n\n\n\nResponse By Scott Wagoner \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nScott is presently the Pastoral Minister at High Point Friends Meeting (FUM) in High Point\, North Carolina. He has been in Quaker pastoral ministry for forty years. His first pastorate was in Farmland\, Indiana while he was attending the Earlham School of Religion from 1986-1990. He graduated in 1990 with an M.Div. with Honors. Scott is presently the Assistant Clerk for Friends United Meeting North America and also serves on the Board for the School of the Spirit\, a Quaker contemplative prayer ministry as well as the ESR Board of Advisors. Scott is also a certified Coach with the International Coaching Federation and offers coaching for individuals\, organizations\, and congregations. He often partners with Colin Saxton through his LLC\, “Growing Edge Resources” to facilitate coaching experiences with congregations towards helping them flourish and discover their growing edge. He recently co-authored a book with Eddie Hammett titled\, “Coaching as Spiritual Practice” which will be available soon as an eBook and in print form.

DESCRIPTION:Ministry always has challenges. Ministering in anxious times provides some unique challenges. Kelly Burk (counselor and pastor) will engage us in preparing ourselves for how to meet the challenges and meet people where they are without losing ourselves. Jim Higginbotham (professor of pastoral care) will provide additional insight and perspective. The ESR Pastors Conference will include interactive elements throughout the day. \n\n\n\nPresented by the Quaker Leadership Center @ Earlham School of Religion \n\n\n\nThis topic is so important and pertinent to our times that ESR’s Quaker Leadership Center is offering this experience as a “Pay-as-Led.” This means you pay what you can. Please note that for onsite participants this event does include lunch. The actual cost to provide this program is $50 per person onsite and $25 per person for online (Zoom) Please keep these factors in mind as you discern what you can pay.

SUMMARY:QLC Quaker Beliefs for Everyone Course with Steve Angell
DESCRIPTION:This course is for Friends who want to understand the deep roots of our current practices! \n\n\n\nAbout this Course:Quakerism is not a credal religion\, but all varieties of Quakerism are structured around certain doctrines that have roots going back to the religion’s seventeenth century origins. I will lead a consideration of what these doctrines have been\, and how they were understood prior to about 1700. Robert Barclay’s Apology for a True Christian Divinity (English version published in 1678) is an optional reading to prepare for this workshop\, but you are welcome to attend if you have not had the opportunity to read. I will present and there will subsequently be an opportunity for small group discussion\, and for each group to post a short summary of their discussion in the chat. Subsequently\, I will also take some questions. \n\n\n\nThe topics for the six weeks will be: \n\n\n\n1. God and Christ \n\n\n\n2. Human Nature and Holiness \n\n\n\n3. Barclay’s Understanding of Scripture\, its Uses and Authority \n\n\n\n4. Spiritual Sacraments \n\n\n\n5. Eschatology and the Testimonies \n\n\n\n6. Barclay’s Understanding of Worship and Ministry \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nBio: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nStephen W. Angell has taught Quaker Studies at the Earlham School of Religion for 25 years. He has co-edited The Oxford Handbook of Quaker Studies\, Early Quakers and their Theological Thought\, The Creation of Modern Quaker Diversity\, and several other books. He is a member of the Oxford Quaker Meeting in Oxford\, Ohio. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nPayment:The six-week course is being offered “Pay-as-Led.” This means you pay what you can. SUMMARY:Conflict in Meetings/Churches: Workshop Training with Bill Eagles
DESCRIPTION:Conflicts within congregations happen. From the Gnostics to the Reformation to the last 30 years\, we’ve seen massive Christian disagreements. Quakers have their own history of splits. But the divisive issues within congregation are both large and small. For four sessions\, participants will work with one another and with Bill Eagles (mediator\, retired lawyer\, and Quaker leader) examining how to avoid\, recognize\, manage\, and heal from conflicts within your congregation. How does decision-making turn into conflict? What can we learn from prevailing? From what feels like a loss? How can move through and beyond conflicts? \n\n\n\nSo\, unless you bask in a conflict-free congregation\, participation will offer insights into dealing with conflicts within your congregation\, with attention on how your own approach can result in growth in faith. \n\n\n\nThe 4-sessions are scheduled for \n\n\n\nThurs.\, 11/13 from 7-9 PM (Eastern) Conflict Arising: What it looks and feels like. \n\n\n\nFri.\, 11/14 from 7-9 PM (Eastern) I Can’t Hear You: How we listen and how we might. \n\n\n\nSat.\, 11/15 from 10 -11:30 AM (Eastern) What do you mean that I might be wrong. \n\n\n\nSat.\, 11/15 from 12:30 – 2 PM (Eastern) Avoiding and Managing Conflict Like Quakers. \n\n\n\nThis event is offered ON SITE @ Earlham School of Religion and ONLINE via Zoom. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis topic is so important and pertinent to our times that ESR’s Quaker Leadership Center is offering this experience as a “Pay-as-Led.” This means you pay what you can. Please note that for onsite participants this event does include lunch on Saturday. The actual cost to provide this program is $175 per person onsite and $150 per person for online (Zoom) Please keep these factors in mind as you discern what you can pay. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nFor leaders of Friends Meetings\, but open to congregational leaders in all faith traditions \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nRegister at https://QLCConflictinMeetings.eventbrite.com!

In this interactive workshop\, participants will be introduced to the urgent issue of farm stress in our communities.
