DESCRIPTION:The 2026 HEART OF PEACE: A Speaker & Seminar Series \n\n\n\nThe Quaker Leadership Center (QLC) invites the communities of Earlham School of Religion\, Earlham College\, Bethany Theological Seminary\, Western Yearly Meeting\, Friends United Meeting\, Friends Meetings of Richmond along with QLC participants to two events. \n\n\n\nMax Carter & Jane Deichler Carter \n\n\n\n  September 15 and 16\, 2026 \n\n\n\nfrom 7:00 – 8:30 PM \n\n\n\nEarlham School of Religion and online \n\n\n\nTogether they have led nearly thirty service-learning programs in Palestine and Israel. Focusing on sharing the realities on the ground\, they are committed to exposing participants to a full spectrum of Israelis and Palestinians who offer a variety of perspectives and concerns and reveal the challenges and opportunities to achieving a just and lasting peace in the region. \n\n\n\nOn Tuesday\, Sept. 15 \n\n\n\nThree Generations of Peacemaking/ Peacebuilding: Things change over time! \n\n\n\nOn Wednesday\, Sept. 16 \n\n\n\nOur Intertwined Journeys as Peacemakers/Peacebuilders \n\n\n\nRegister for Tuesday and/or Wednesday by contacting qlcoffice@earlham.edu \n\n\n\nRegistration is required. \n\n\n\nMore about Jane & Max \n\n\n\nJane Deichler Carter grew up in western New York State and met Max while she was attending Earlham College and he was attending Earlham School of Religion. Max L. Carter grew up in central Indiana\, attended Ball State University\, and completed his alternative service during the Vietnam War teaching at Ramallah Friends School in occupied Palestine. Together they have led nearly thirty service-learning programs in Palestine and Israel. Focusing on sharing the realities on the ground\, they are committed to exposing participants to a full spectrum of Israelis and Palestinians who offer a variety of perspectives and concerns and reveal the challenges and opportunities to achieving a just and lasting peace in the region. \n\n\n\nPresently they live in Greensboro\, North Carolina\, and are active members of New Garden Friends Meeting\, N.C. Fellowship of Friends. Jane retired in 2016 with an M.A. in math education and 35 years in ministry\, teaching\, and administration in Friends meetings and primarily Friends schools. Max retired in 2015 with an M.Min from ESR and a PhD in American Religious History and 45 years in ministry and teaching in Quaker secondary schools and colleges.  They have three grown children\, seven grandchildren\, and one sweet rescue dog\, Yahya.  \n\n\n\nAbout The Betty Carter Peace Fund \n\n\n\nThe Betty Carter Peace Fund is a living memorial to honor Betty Lynn Carter (Bickel) (10-15-1957 to 12-28-1984)\, graduate of Earlham College (Class of ’79).The purpose of The Betty Carter Peace Fund is to bring to the Earlham campus “outstanding persons of Christian faith\, scholarship\, and experience who are noteworthy for their investigation into the role that moral vision\, religious tradition\, theology and a life of spiritual sensitivity bring to questions of peace\, human relations\, and human need of our time.” \n\n\n\nAbout The Heart of Peace: A Speaker & Seminar Series \n\n\n\nThe fund was originally established in 1985  by Wayne & Betsy Carter (parents) and Philman Bickel (husband). SUMMARY:Was Quaker women's ministry in the 1650s a foundation for the modern Quaker testimony of equality?
DESCRIPTION:This talk will suggest ways that early Quaker women’s ministry was\, and was not\, a foundation for the modern Quaker testimony of equality\, drawing on the experiences of Quaker women such as Ann Audland\, Mary Cole\, Priscilla Cotton\, Margaret Fell\, and Martha Simmons in 1655 and 1656. It will explore connections between women’s ministry and apocalyptic theology (on which much of 1650s Quakerism was centered)\, and then examine the highly contested egalitarian implications of that ministry in the context of those times. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSteve Angell’s talk is based on his most recent publication\, Martha Simmons: A Life that examines Martha Calvert Simmons (1624–1665)\, regarded as one of the foremost Quaker female ministers in the mid-1650s. Most famous for her organizing role of James Nayler’s entry into Bristol in October 1656 re-enacting Christ’s entry into Jerusalem\, this book carefully reconstructs fragmentary evidence to portray the many ways she served the early Quaker movement. \n\n\n\nThis book argues that from June to December 1656\, Simmons was Nayler’s ‘chaste lover’. It also examines her antagonism toward leading Quaker George Fox\, focused on their different views of women’s leadership within the Quaker movement.
