M.Div. Emphasis – Peace and Justice
Quakers are strongly identified with issues of peace and social justice. Friends testimonies in these areas have led individuals and nations toward equality and harmony, while at the same time serving as a counterweight to the ideas of prevailing cultures.
ESR seeks to awaken students’ awareness of issues of peace and social justice in daily life – in homes, local communities and the world. Through theological education, we nurture concerns for these issues and help students discern how best to use their gifts as witness against oppression and lead others on a path toward peace.
ABOUT THE PEACE AND JUSTICE EMPHASIS
The peace and justice emphasis equips students with an understanding of Quaker peace witness, conflict resolution and interfaith dialogue.
Emphasis courses include Introduction to Peace and Justice Studies; the Bible and Violence and Nonviolence; Liberation Theologies; Process Theology, Conflict Resolution; History of Friends’ Peace Witness; and a Spirituality of Peacemaking. ESR students are encouraged to supplement course work with active involvement in their peace and justice concerns, outside their class work.
